Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is a field of medicine focused on the unique needs of a woman’s reproductive system. Health topics that fall under gynecology include:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Menstruation and fertility
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Hormone disorders

Early detection is an essential step in maintaining your health, and it can be accomplished during regular gynecological exams. These annual screenings are pelvic exams that include Pap smears and STD testing if you’re sexually active.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear, or Pap test, is screening for cervical cancer. Your cervix is the narrow, lower portion of your uterus.

During a Pap smear, a speculum holds your vagina open so your doctor can gently scrape cells from your cervix. The cells scraped from your cervix are then checked for cervical cancer.

Pap smears are not a painful procedure, but they can be uncomfortable. They are an essential step to preventing and diagnosing cervical cancer. The cells that are tested during a Pap smear not only identify problematic cells that are currently present, but they can also detect issues that may develop in the future.

Regular Pap testing often begins at age 21 but depends on your age and individual needs.

What is STD testing?

Many sexually transmitted diseases do not have any symptoms, so regular testing is essential for your health if you’re sexually active.

There are several tests that are used to check for sexually transmitted diseases, including urine tests, cheek swabs, and blood tests. During your pelvic exam, Dr. Fatima will check the general health of your genital area, looking for sores, rashes, irritation, discharge, or warts. If necessary, she will also swab the area for samples to assist in your diagnosis.

Symptoms of STDs may include:

  • Unusual discharge from your vagina
  • Bumps or sores around or on your genitals, buttocks, or thighs
  • Burning during urination
  • Pain, irritation, itching, or swelling in your vulva, vagina, or anus
  • Flu-like symptoms

These symptoms can also indicate other health conditions, so speak with your doctor if you have concerns.
